In seven days I leave for a very long road trip with the family. We rented a van with two tv’s, and my mom just discovered she can read books on her cellular smart phone, so that will leave me completely unbothered, and free to stare out the window and try to find people who look like they’re getting road head, paint my toenails on the dashboard, and listen to whatever music I want.
(Andy doesn’t let me drive because, while I prefer cars to airplanes, I am afraid of roads when there are other people on them, and have been known to drive off them crying when trucks come to close. I’m considering hypnosis, which I assume will be a less deadly option than drinking.)
But, now that I have all this freedom, I’m stumped trying to put together a playlist to get me through the next 1500 miles.
Which is, ahem, where you come in.
Share you top 5 favorites, and I will share my mega-rad playlist with you on Spotify, plus, I’ll pick one of you to win a $100 Visa Gift card to buy a year’s worth or Spotify with, or liquor, honestly, I don’t care what you use it for, it’s your money.
All you have to do is leave me a comment with 5 of your favorite songs. Have more than 5? No problem, you can enter as much as you want.
I’ll close this contest tonight (February 16th) at 11:59pm EST, then I will randomly draw one (1) winner, and mail the prize upon email confirmation.

These are some of my tops lately….
Looks like Sex – Mike Posner (Only if you get to wear your headphones during the trip! Definitely not child appropriate.)
Someone Like You – Adele (Duh?)
Blackout – Breathe Carolina (Much more fun than initially thought)
Glad You Came – The Wanted (self explanatory!)
I figured a few more were in order too!
Called Out of the Dark – Snow Patrol
Down – Anberlin
Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People
Princess of China – Coldplay & Rihanna
Our Song – The Spill Canvas
For road trips, I particularly like
1) We Didn’t Start the Fire – It’s long and involved so it helps with mile marker monotony
2) Love Story – I know its Taylor Swift but the songs are so perfect for on the road belting
3) Freefalling – Cliche thanks to Jerry Maguire but so good on a road trip
4) Lose Yourself – anything to feel like a bad ass when you still have 600 miles to go
5) We found love – Glee version. Really, most songs from Glee :)
what is the mood of said road trip…need some playlist guidance. Booty-shaking? Nerve-calming? Butt Rock?
Definitely an escape. And I listen to almost anything from classic rock, hipster/indie, rap, girl stuff, just not TONS of country.
–>For road trips:
Regulate – Warren G
Summertime – Will Smith (and DJ Jazzy Jeff)
Wish You Were Here – Incubus
Runaway Train – Soul Asylum
Vultures – John Mayer
I have a lot of playlists inluding my most recent one called RIP which is Michael Jackson, Heavy D and Whitney Houston.
“Carry on My Wayward Son” – Kansas
“Someone like you” – Adele
“Shake it out” – Florence and the Machines
“Piano Man” – Billy Joel
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Elvis Presley
“Never Gonna Give You Up” – Rick Astley
“Super Freak” – RICK MOTHERFUCKING JAMES
OH AND ANYTHING BY THE CIVIL WARS, THE BEATLES, SKILLET, LED ZEPPLIN OR EVANESCENCE.
Also, I can make playlists that are rap oriented, country, “slow jam r&b” (patent pending,) rock, 80’s hair metal or alternative. Cause I’m awesome like that. Good luck on the road trip!
You need road trip songs… I got yer road trip songs right here.
Everybody’s Talkin’ – Harry Nilsson. Should start off every playlist of every road trip.
Baba O’Reilly – The Who. Nothing like a singalong to get things moving.
Graceland – Paul Simon. You may not be on your way to see Elvis, but… it’s a metaphor anyway.
Another One Goes By – The Walkmen. A criminally under-appreciated goodbye song.
Tiny Dancer – Elton John. It’s almost a cliche, but it’s absence on such a playlist would be noticed.
Try to enjoy yourself!
Totally has to be guilty pleasures so here is my 5 guilty pleasures that are a must on my roadtips:

1) Chelsea Dagger – Fratellis

I dare you to find a list with something for everyone on it any better than the following:
Kanye West: Golddigger
James: Crazy
Lil’ Wayne: Mr. Officer
Semisonic: Closing Time
The Kinks: Lola
Flaming Lips: She Don’t Like Jelly
Jay Z and Beyonce: Bonnie and Clyde
Michael Jackson: The Way You Make Me Feel

Etta James – I’d Rahter Go Blind .. Or ANYTHING! <3
Amy Winehouse – Valerie
Duffy – Mercy
Bob Dylan – Tangled Up in Blue
Kiss – Beth
These are some of our go-to car songs:
Tricky – Run DMC
Slow Ride – Foghat
Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen (super entertaining to listen to kids try to sound out ‘scaramouche, scaramouche, will you do the fandango?’)
Train, Train – Blackfoot
Money – Pink Floyd
For road trips, I need something where I know the lyrics, so I can sing badly. However, this means I’m limited to 80s power ballads for the most part, but I’ll try to leave those out. Here are the first five that come to mind:

Somebody that I used to know- Gotye
Hey ya- Obadiah Parker version

I tend to like depressing stuff.
Steph
My kids like some dance music for the car. My husband is more of an Eagles/CSNY car trip guy, but he gets out voted by me, our 3 year old, and my 9 month old (who sleeps to techno music). So here’s some “dance” songs.
We Turn it Up – Oh Land
Julius – Starfucker
Do You Want it All – Two Door Cinema Club
The Reeling – Passion Pit
Go Outside – Cults
Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People
I have a lot of favorite songs, which I’m pretty sure is the opposite of how the word favorite is supposed to work. Whatever. I’ll stick to five songs.
Innerpartysystem – Out of Touch
Hey Champ – Cold Dust Girl
Radiohead – 15 Step
Royskopp – Only This Moment
The XX – Islands
Have a fantastic trip!
Uprising – Muse
No Leaf Clover – Metallica S&M
Not Your Fault – Awolnation
99 Red Balloons – Nina
Dance Without Sleeping – Melissa Etheridge
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens… I always imagine the scene in Little Miss Sunshine.
500 Miles by the Proclaimers, because duh.
Boys in the Hood by Dynamite Hack. There’s nothing like a song that makes you feel gangsta while simultaneously reminding you how incredibly white you are.
Light and Day/Reach for the Sun by the Polyphonic Spree. They played it on Scrubs, so of course it’s good.
I Believe in a Thing Called Love by the Darkness. How can you resist singing along?
There is nothing worse than a road trip without good music. Good luck! :)
So, as I sit here trying to think of the 5 best roadtrip songs, I realize how hard it is to commit to just 5. Apparently I have commitment issues. As if songs had feelings and the ones I left out are sitting in a corner crying. Or are going to break up with me and refuse to play anymore. I need them to know they are all special. I have a problem. Here are my random top picks:
Hey Mama- Mat Kearney
Whatta Man- Salt N Peppa
Royal Gregory- Holy Fuck
California Love- Tupac
Pancho and Lefty- Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard
Well despite being a teenager in these trying times, I do not like all that new hood rat music, but rather music where you can look out the window and act like its your background music. It;s very random I must warn.
1. One And Only – Adele
2. Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice
3. Roslyn – Bon Iver
4. Uptown Girl – Glee Warbler Edition
5. Brass Monkey – The Beastie Boys
6. My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion (In honor of the 3D re-release)
7. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
8. Under Pressure – David Bowie & Queen
9. Jessie’s Girl – Rick Springfield
10. You Make My Dreams – Hall & Oates (For the great moustaches)
p.s my computer is telling me that ‘Moustaches’ is spelled wrong, but wont tell me how to spell it. I apologize.
I hope you enjoy my favorites !
Any Road — George Harrison
America — Simon and Garfunkel
Every Day is A Winding Road — Sheryl Crow
Intergalactic — Beastie Boys
Pink Moon – Nick Drake
