When I posted this photo on Instagram, I got one of two comments.
A. I love them!
B. What the hell do you wear with that?
Good question, because while cute on the hanger… what the hell do you wear with sweater leggings? And why am I voluntarily stretching pattern across my thighs? Does Target pump roofie through their vents that alters my normally rational decision making and budgeting skills?
Thankfully, these pants lend themselves to my largely daytime hobo attire. In short, I layer things on top of them and then go out in public.
Taken by Andy as we were finding a spot for my Thanksgiving post TOMORROW! YAY!
On a scale between 1 and Zubaz… how badly will I regret wearing these pants in 5-10 years?
You know what, save it, I don’t care. They are the softest, most comfortable pants I own. And I am wearing them.
Denim Shirt, size 1X, Target
Gray Cardigan, size XL, White House Black Market
Fair Isle Leggings, size XL, Target
Black Leather Boots, Type Z Wide Calf
You rock them. Work it, Mama. :)
I love them. I’ve been all over the internet swooning over ridiculous patterned leggings like these. I want them ALL.
Super cute on you. I could never pull that off but you can Rock it!
Brittany, can I ask you a ? about your boots? I’ve been searching, without much luck, for boots to fit my big calves. I think I’m going to order the ones you have on – so thanks for posting the link. My question to you is, do they fit pretty true to size or did you have to order up or down a full or half size?
They fit very true to size. I am a 10, and I order a 10, and can still wear thick socks with them, which I love because I’m in Ohio and it’s cold here.
I linked to the BROWN because they didn’t have black on the sale site I shop.
I also HIGHLY recommend Fitzwell wide calf boots. AMAZING. The Valencia is my jam, I live in them.
Stephany: I also have wide calves and I am short with small feet (size 6.5 or 7).
I bought extra wide calf boots from Zappos (Gabriella Rocha Katy Extra Wide Calf 2) in a size 7 and they fit perfectly. I just ordered Fitzwell Akala-Extra Wide Calf from Zappos this week.
I recently bought some colored ones with a similar pattern, also from Target that I would otherwise never have purchased. They are super cute though and I too will likely regret or giggle in 5-10yrs, probably 10 when my boys look at photos and ask me WTF?
That said, I haven’t seen those ones at my local Target but they are super cute and look great on you!
You rock them.
I however never look pulled together enough/wear enough layers for it to work for me. I’m constantly covered in baby drool (and other unidentifiable baby-related goo), so fashion is taking a back seat.
Ummmm…I was just saying how I needed to get a pair of Zubaz. Is that wrong? Football season does something to me, and I’m not going to fight it.
The leggings are fine, but oh my god ahhhhh…
LEGGINGS. ARE NOT. PANTS.
Please please PLEASE stop spreading the sexist body-shaming hate.
This girl explains.

Thank you.
FYI – it makes me crazy when people call leggings pants but it has nothing to do with what they look like and everything to do with vocabulary. I get the same level of annoyed when people say sweater instead of sweatshirt or something like that.
Liz, I’m not spreading body shaming hate. My feelings on leggings as pants spread to people of alllll shapes and sizes and I do not care about the dictionary’s definition of pants. It is just a fashion pet peeve of mine and I twitch a little when I see people wearing leggings with tops that you wouldn’t wear tights with. I also hate those little bootie shoes that are so in now and sock buns, but that has nothing to do with what I think about any person’s feet or hair.
It’s ok for people to have different opinions on things. I would hope no one would share things on a public blog just for comments of complete agreement. How very boring.
Surely you have your own fashion pet peeves too?

Can I not say “OMG What? No!” to that?

First off the leggings are pretty neat and you rock for even buying them in the first place. The whole outfit looks great! But I really love the cardigan over a denim shirt! It looks super comfy and warm. I will steal this idea, thanks!
You rock. Those leggings look great on you. Love the denim shirt and cardigan. Love the boots. When you cover up a lot of the pattern, it’s not so bad on us bigger women. My husband would also say leggings are not pants. I say, if you have a long enough shirt to cover any “front wedgie” (that’s what I call it when talking to my 9 yr old daughter), then wear the leggings as pants for hanging around the house, errands, or whatever you want!
You are gorgeous and your confidence and real-ness make you even more so.
you said everything I wanted to, Larissa.
Brittany = FABULOUS!!!!!
Thanks so much, ladies!
(And yes, the shirt comes to mid-upper thigh and the sweater is long, front and back butt? Totally covered;)
Leggings are pants only if worn with a long shirt. You need that qualifier. It’s like an algebra equation or something.
they are rockin these over in Italy and France, I know this first hand. However, I do not like them. I think if you wore them with a skirt, and used them and tights, then they might work. Otherwise they are house only pants.
Agreed, leggings can be pants if the right places are covered. All that being said, I cannot pull it off without feeling like I am out in my pjs. Envy.
Brittany: You rock these leggings. I admit to being a little intimidated by the pattern, but your styling tips give me the confidence that I could pull it off. Thanks!
Patterned legging scare the crap out of me, but I have been wanting to try them so bad. Thanks for giving me a push to go get myself a pair. And, you are so right about Target, there IS something in the air in that place! LOL!
I just literally laughed out loud at work about roofies in the air system at Target. SO TRUE!! People are looking at me funny now… wait, I think they’ve always been looking at me that way.
I need some boots bad. I want to wear leggings too.
Totally had to google Zubaz. I’m so glad that trend is gone. I love your leggings, though, so I doubt you’ll look back in a few years and regret them.
You wear them how you want to! And your doing it right. Although I strongly agree with a lot of you ladies, please keep your lady parts covered, nobody wants to see that. Oh, and I love this blog, Brittany you are brilliant!
Thank you!
Love em’ Brittany! I think they look terrific!! LOVE the look with denim! Rock em’! Does Target have several diff patterns? MY youngest teen daughter loves em…she has the legging material ones from either Pink or Buckle….can’t wait to show her your pict/style after school today. I love that they are “sweater” material….the ones she already has (with the fun patterns) are just legging like material….she has to wear a top that goes past her fingertips on her thighs”…due to the entire city school system BANNING Leggings and Yoga pants…due to “the distraction it causes to the male students” <NO JOKE…they have to have a certain length top…yada yada…and this is middle school.it has been a HUGE deal around here…anyone else have that problem?
Yes! Target has a few different patterns, and they are so much softer and stretchier than normal leggings. Very comfy. If you click the link, it should show you a few different options.
That is insane about the school ban… then again, these weren’t even a THING when I was in school, so I don’t remember. But, these are so easy to toss under long sweaters or button ups, I’m glad they are allowed to at least have the option.
I hope she loves them!
When leggings became a thing I threw out all of my other pants and never looked back. Now it’s leggings, jeggings, or bust.
Did you just fall out of a Twilight movie or what? The dark, gloomy woods are totally complimentary to your red headed firey-ness. You look fabulous.
Leggings can be pants. When worn with a short that covers ones ass. That’s my only rule.
How funny! I just bought those same pants! You look fabulous!!
you look adorbs!! love them!!!
I love those! My first thought when I saw the title was “a solid colored tunic of course”, but I love the look you’ve chosen! I’m so doing that. Thanks
umm yeah. I’m gonna have to steal this look.
hold on wide calf boots?? where have they been all my life. I always have that issue when trying on boots. I must inquire about these!
ps love the leggings, i’m never sure if i can pull them off but i’d love some comfy pants. if i can find boots that fit then i’ll get leggings!
I love them! Hope my Target still has some!
i’m SO not a leggings fan, but i SO ordered a pair of those last night! i couldn’t help myself after I saw your pic. and i know i have the perfect top and flats to go with them. i wish they would get here yesterday!!
