The Jell-O Pudding Pop Revival!

So, I’ve written before about how much hostility I hold toward whomever made the decision to pull Frozen Jell-O Pudding pops from the market.

I’ve reached out to Bill Cosby a few times, but his publicists assures me he had nothing to do with it.

I was crushed. Like Burples, Bonkers, Dirty Sexy Money crushed.

But then, my friend Sonja of was like, hey B, join my movement of doing crap from your Pinterest boards (because people actually follow through with that shit sometimes, apparently)! That seemed like a lofty request, but I really like her, so I was like, fine but I’m not doing anything from my YAY CRAFTS or YAY TANTRIC boards.

So, I opened my Pinterest account and immediately set eyes on this little fellow

DIY Pudding Pops


Kinda, okay, two things fast. First of all, and sometimes I’m totally guilty of this, too, when I get in a groove and repin things quickly, but try not to put the whole recipe in the pin description. People work hard on recipes, and deserve the click-through. If I am sober and lucid, I try to remember to erase it when I click repin, but even I forget a lot, so a good reminder for us all. But this leads me to…

Second, this pin leads to nowhere. Dude, pin it from the site you find it from. You know, so we have a place to go for reference, and to give credit. I tried really hard to track down the origin of this recipe, but… it’s a little all over. So if it’s you, let me know, and also, I owe you my first born.

So, let’s get started. DIY Jell-O Pudding Pops, no knives required, this means child labor, aka, the two stars of the upcoming series, Hey! Let’s get Awkward and Cook!

Jello Pudding PopFirst the supplies: Milk, Chocolate Pudding Mix, Cool Whip, Popsicle Sticks, and Dixie Cups.

Jello Pudding PopIn a bowl, dump 1 1/2 cups of cold milk.

Jello Pudding PopNext, add your packet of chocolate pudding mix.

Jello Pudding PopStir to mix.

Jello Pudding PopNow, plop in two cups of Cool Whip.

Jello Pudding PopBlend thoroughly.

Jello Pudding PopFor easy freezing, line up your Dixie Cups on a small cookie sheet, and fill each cup about 3/4 of the way full. We got about 8 pops from our mix.

Jello Pudding PopStick a popcicle stick in the center of each cup, the mixture should be thick enough to hold them in place.

Jello Pudding PopAnd then pop them in the freezer for at least 4-6 hours.

Jello Pudding PopToss your spoons, and burn your fudgsicles y’all. My childhood is doing the hammer dance, this recipe is a winner!

I will be making these for sure. Both my husband and I miss Jell-O pudding pops a lot. Kemps makes a pudding pop, but somehow it is just not the same. Thanks for the recipe.

Not to burst anyone’s fun food bubble, buuuut….
You do know cool whip isn’t real food right?… :/

We use a similar (bagged) product at work- and it doesn’t melt when left out or rot. We made a birthday thing for someone and they didn’t eat it and a month later of sitting out and it still looked exactly the same even though it sat out in 100+ temps.

Due to a deprived childhood of no processed food (hippie mom… *eye roll*), I have never had a pudding pop. Will have to try this and reclaim a little part of that missing childhood joy!

Seriously. Gigi=fabulous hair+ fabulous personality. I kept scrolling just to see how her face changed in each picture! I love it :)
Also those look delicious. Pudding is my personal downfall.

Loved them as a kid, would love to give one to my toddler to try and then fight over the other 7 with my dh (who also has that starwars shirt).

Fun fact: I tried to find the original source and I failed. But I did find a recipe for pudding pops on the Kraft website. It pretty much said to buy Kraft Pudding Cups, open the lids, stick in popsicle sticks, and freeze them. I kid you not.

Right? I tried the same thing, figured it had to be a Kraft take off, and then read that they just put sticks in pudding pops and was like WHAT THE HELL!? I’m glad I wasn’t the only one unable to find the origin though, it bugs me not to track it down.

Thank God I have all these puddin’ pops to comfort me.

Not sure if this is the origin of the post you wanted, but it has the same pick and recipe… …
It starts with the Kraft recipe, then a “healthified” version, then hers with the Cool Whip.

Also on a side note, I loved the thin layer of ice as well!

So a few years ago, on a dare, I sent an email to Jell-o about the pudding pop situation. This is the recipe they sent me to make our own. Of course I was angry and responded that I needed them to just make them for me…but whatever. This will do.

er ma gerd!!! I love the way the old pudding pops kinda had that ice layer on the outside but were creamy inside. D0 these do that? If they do I’ll sacrifice my first born in your honor.

So excited to try this, and I, too, remember the thin ice layer. As for the comment about Cool Whip not being “real food,” I’m pretty sure no one is putting pudding pops in the health food category. And if you put Cool Whip out in high temps with no change, I don’t think the Cool Whip was the issue. I’ve carefully cultivated mold on my Cool Whip in the fridge for many years now with no difficulty. ;)

I love you so much for this. Pudding pops were my very favorite treat growing up. I was obsessed. I always keep an eye out for them at the grocery store. I am making these this weekend.

OMG! I love ALL of you soooo much right now! I was a Jell-O Pudding Pops fanatic. I was just telling my children about them several days ago. All of a sudden I got this strong craving for one. Before, I had honestly forgotten about them until then. I was reading everyone’s posts and starting laughing so hard, like “oh yeah I remember that!” A double thumbs up to Justin for that comment! It is funny how that fine layer of ice was so welcoming and it is too funny that other Pudding Pops lovers could notice and comment on something that seemed so personal! I love it. Get ready, cuz heres the finishing touch to the pudding pop! After you take them out of the molds, let them set out for a couple of minutes then put them all back in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or so and like magic- you have that awesome thin layer of ice hugging the pudding pop!

Thank you for sharing this recipe, my family LOVES pudding pops. Like you we were so disappointed when we couldn’t find them in stores…you know some bean counter in an office somewhere made the choice to axe the pops. Totally crappy decision!
