School lunch? No thanks!

Facebook friend and KSMB Morning Show Co-host, Ali Roberts, shared this photo with me today that she personally snapped from her daughter’s very real Lafayette Parish school cafeteria.

Schools ache for grants for fresh fruit and health initiatives, meanwhile, food like this is the norm.

Do you want your kids putting that into their bodies?

I saw this on my news feed when she put it on your wall, and I just stared at it for a few minutes, completely dumbfounded.

I still don’t even have words for how awful this is. I cringe to think what school lunches will be the norm when my son gets into elementary school.

Oh, how horrible. When I went to chef school, they told us “You eat first with your eyes.” This makes me wish I had never seen it.

Sadly, I’ve seen worse: The breakfasts at my child’s school.

That being said, they’ve started a school/community garden that provides fresh, tasty produce– especially during summer school. As long as they can keep doing that, I have some faith!

Gross. This might be my niece’s dream. The yellow food group.
I remember being dumbfounded for days after watching Jaime Oliver’s show one summer where the meal he made, with fresh veggies of every color, didn’t pass nutritional inspection because the veggie content wasn’t high enough, but a hamburger and a double order of french fries met all of the requirements.
Where did we go wrong? I refuse to believe it was the Gov’s intent to force fried potatoes on kids to meet a substantive requirement. It makes me ill.

Yuck. This is not what every US school lunch looks like though. In Seattle- the public elem school my child attends has a fresh fruit/veggie bar, whole grain breads only, veggie meals & other whole food items.
