Real-Sized Style Icons

Who wants to see just one type of model when you open up a magazine, flip on the television, or do some online shopping? After all, this is not a cookie-cutter world.  We are all different, and that should be embraced in our society, not shunned.

There are a few celebrities that I can instantly relate to based on their curves.  They aren’t necessarily plus-sized as much as they are real- sized, in my opinion.

These women are like your mothers, your sisters, your girlfriends….

They have curves and they aren’t afraid to accentuate them.  They have style and they know how to showcase it.  They refuse to hide in horribly ill-fitted clothing.  They are singing and dancing.  They are in front of the cameras.  They inspire and empower.  And, they are real-sized women like you and me!

Here are my Top Ten “Real-Sized” Fashion and Style Icons:

Who are some of your favorite real-sized celebrity icons?

Gina Torres – who played Zoey on Firefly (cus I’m jsut that much of a dork)

Rachel April 26, 2011 at 8:50 am

Scifi channel had a Firefly marathon on Sunday. Cause I’m a dork too!

Danielle May 11, 2011 at 10:58 am

I loved Firefly!!!!! It’s on Netflix. So is the movie!

Daisy April 26, 2011 at 8:12 am

Kirsten Vangsness (she plays Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds) – she is quirky, cute and REAL SIZED.

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:36 am

Oh, I know her! I love her style!

daisy April 29, 2011 at 8:28 am

Yes! I just love her. Her look on the show makes me happy everytime I see her :)

Desiree' May 26, 2011 at 12:10 am

LOVE HER!!!!

Amy April 26, 2011 at 8:13 am

Christina Hendricks is definitely one of my faves. What a gorgeous list of women! I’ll add to the list Mariska Hargitay.

Sara April 26, 2011 at 8:41 am

I love Sara Ramirez but I’ve also loved Kate Winslet and her curves since I first saw her in Titantic, so many years ago.

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:37 am

Kate Winslet is definitely REAL sized!

Rachel April 26, 2011 at 8:52 am

Love your picks. I also love Bette Midler.

You named all my faves! Adele, I just adore her. And Queen. All of them. I want to see more women like them getting air time and covers.

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:38 am

Yes, me, too! And, I think we will.

Danielle May 11, 2011 at 10:58 am

Me three!

JenniferA April 26, 2011 at 10:28 am

Adele is gorgeous and her voice is amazing!

These women are beautiful, but I have an issue with labelling them as “real”. Real women come in all sizes, even skinny. It’s great to see more body types being represented as beautiful in the media, but I don’t think that makes them more “real” than any other girl.

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:39 am

I agree with you. Skinny girls are real sized, too. I guess my issue is with being called “plus sized”.

E3 April 26, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I agree with that! This might be a case where the term “curvy” is entirely appropriate – these women are all curvy, but just how curvy and where those curves are varies. Not all of the posts on this site are curvy-specific (though some definitely are). Nothing wrong with having content dedicated to a specific body shape, I’ve just been thinking about the words we use to describe beauty lately :)

Brandy April 26, 2011 at 11:09 am

I’m pretty sure I have a GIANT girl crush on Adele – so glad you included her!

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:37 am

You and me, both! I just love her so much!

Jennifer April 26, 2011 at 11:28 am

I love that you included Amber Riley. Good Luck Charlie is actually one Disney show that my husband and I both enjoy. It is cute, funny, and clean. I love Amber’s character on that show. I also like that they have story lines where cute boys actually like her and she isn’t just the sidekick.

Mishelle April 26, 2011 at 11:40 am

That’s fantastic!

Anon April 26, 2011 at 4:21 pm

Mariska Hargitay missed. She is more than beautiful. It’s gorgeous.

Tara (Do These Kids Make Me Look Crazy?) April 26, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Love Queen Latifah. And I like that girl on Mike and Molly . . . do you know who I mean? She was Suki on The Gilmore Girls? But I’m mainly jealous of her red hair, which really isn’t relevant to this post at all.

Kristy April 26, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Melissa McCarthy is who you mean Tara! Love her!!!

Crystal April 27, 2011 at 11:37 am

Oh Danielle Fishel used to be stunning when she was in her early to mid 20s. She was nowhere near “plus sized” but had an amazing body. Dont get me wrong, shes beautiful now, but she went on some diet and dropped like 50lbs…just not the same.

MissMeaghan May 2, 2011 at 11:56 am

Same with Sara Rue. Us Magazine ran a spread with her in it talking about how she can finally wear a bikini now that she is a size 6 instead of a 14. I’m a 14 and I was a bit insulted. Made me feel like Us and Sara Rue were telling me it’s only OK to show off your skin and your body if you eat fake food (Jenny Craig) and lose 50 pounds.

Also, Jennifer Hudson, who really hasn’t done much since losing weight except show off her weight loss.

erin April 29, 2011 at 6:15 am

I lovelovelove! Adele and have always been a fan of the Queen, I also love formerly curvy Jennifer Hudson. As you can see, if they can belt it out, I love them.

McKella May 1, 2011 at 5:10 pm

I love Crystal Renn and Kate Winslet. Lovely, curvy ladies who aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves and their bodies.

J May 3, 2011 at 12:30 pm

I also have a girl crush on Adele. That woman is amazing!

L June 17, 2011 at 6:23 am

I love Adele. She’s around my age but she oozes womanly sophistication beyond her years and she’s one of my fashion inspirations. :)
