Fall is right around the corner, and as happens every single year I’m sitting here thinking, already? Sure, this year was weird. It was so massively hot for most of the country that going outdoors was often not an option. These last few weeks of comfort may have been the only summer some of us have seen. Despite our reluctance we need to accept that summer is fading; apples are now in season and the nights require a sweater. I’m here to help you gracefully transition into fall with a wardrobe full of easy trends that even the most timid should be happy to try.
1. Jewel tones
The neons of summer are fading away and beautiful jewel tones are taking their place. This is a good thing. Almost every skin tone looks more radiant up against these deep and luxurious hues. It’s also a great way to add color to a wardrobe while still employing subtlety and simplicity. The most prevalent jewel tone this season: oxblood. Or, for those of us who don’t enjoy thinking about being spread in the life-sustaining goo of a large mammal: burgundy.
Burgundy has been frequently referred to as this season’s black. You can go bold and buy burgundy pants or lipstick or keep it toned down with a beautiful coat or accessories. It’s easy to fit into any wardrobe as it matches nearly every color and can both make a simple outfit pop and a trendy outfit look refined.
2. Oversized coats
I love this trend. I’m so sick of coats that aren’t big enough to shove my giant sweatshirts in. This year blankety coats are in and I couldn’t be happier. These coats are reminiscent of the boxy 60’s swing coats and are universally flattering. It’s a trend I won’t spend a ton of money on as the look may not prevail for too long, but I’ll be sure to snatch one up as soon as it hits the rack at Target.
3. Fun knits
I think it’s great to have fun with clothes. This fall graphic and adorned sweaters are going to line the shelves. If you make the rest of your outfit simple, a fun sweater can be a great way to show off your lighthearted self. Just be careful of going too far into “ugly sweater party” territory by staying away from overly kitschy items. Don’t know the line? Ease into the trend with a screen-printed sweatshirt-style knit and your favorite jeans.
What last year was sequined this year will be metallic. Let your inner Grecian goddess fly and pick up your favorite item with a metallic flair. Another trend you can apply in many different ways, from shoes to blazers. Make it your own and make a statement.
5. Low maintenance hair
I’m equally as excited about hair fashions this season as I am about the clothes. Hair for the fall is perfectly imperfect and all about natural ease. From low and slick ponies to letting your hair down with its imperfect texture, there is no need to spend more than a few minutes in front of the bathroom mirror this fall. Accentuate with a simple twist or braid and you’re good to go.
This season seems to be all about breaking the rules. Wear blue and black together or try an all white ensemble. Just remember you always look prettiest wearing clothes you love so don’t force a trend that just isn’t for you. Any other fall looks you are dying to try out?

She can usually be found working for free at a non-profit, hiking up mountains, or bossing her husband around because he made the mistake of asking her for help with his business one time. She’s horribly technologically inept (unless people still use AIM in which case she’s a genius) and takes one bite out of every donut instead of finishing a single donut in its entirety, which is probably a metaphor for something but she hasn’t figured out what it is yet.
