Curvy Girl Makeover: Tamara

Last week, I headed to Seattle.

The land of fresh seafood, Chihuly, coffee and Tamara.

Tamara Before

This is Tamara.

I thought selecting a recipient for a Curvy Girl Makeover would be easier the second time around. It wasn’t. Not even a little. I want to dress you all. All of you. But, this time I could only pick one, and Tamara is an amazing woman. I’ll let her tell you in her own words.

I’m not suuuuper excited about posting this all publicly, but you asked, so here you go: I’m a size 22 bottoms, a size 18/20 top. Here’s why I think you should pick me: I’ve struggled with my weight and being the frumpy girl who wears whatever raggedy jeans fit and hoodies since I was a kid. As I got older, my fashion became a bit better–and then last year I was rocking and rolling and lost 50 pounds, and finally started dressing better as I could fit into a size 18 pants and 16/18 tops. It was amazing! I tossed out all my old fat clothes, and wearing items that made me look good made me feel so good that I kept rolling on my weight loss journey in a big way. Aaaand then I went through a really painful emotional experience with a friend, and everything crashed. I gained all the weight back, and since I’d tossed all my “fat” clothes, almost nothing in my closet fits. I have a mountain of student loan debt, and credit card debt racked up from three years at non-profits, not making enough to make ends meet…so now that I have a good-paying job, all my extra income goes to paying off debt and I can’t afford to buy new clothes that actually fit and flatter. It’s depressing, and looking/feeling blah is making me continue my spiral.

So, basically, I’d LOVE this opportunity to help me tap back into the woman I know is inside of me.

Tamara is brave and gorgeous and amazing, and it’s hard to not want to immediately be best friends with her the second you meet her. Oh, she is also short. As in petite.

She is petite and curvy, which in the world of plus size clothes, basically makes her a unicorn. Plus size clothes basically come in one shape… bigger.

That makes shopping for women who come in shapes other than general plus size-ness (read: basically all of us) more difficult.

Welcome to our day.

Shopping Collage

We started out hitting all the usual suspects; Torrid, Lane Bryant and Old Navy. It was a rough start. Two hours in, and frustrations with cuts and lengths, we needed a time out.

And pizza. Everything is clearer after pizza.

Okay, take two.

First stop, the gorgeous Rivet & Sway showroom to pick out a pair of gorgeous specs. Playing with glasses is fun; it’s a crazy inspiring accessory. Oh hey, don’t feel left out. If you head over to, you can pick three pairs to try on in the comfort of your own home for free. Good luck on picking just three, guys. Seriously.

RS Showroom Collage

Refreshed and giddy, we headed back out into the shopping wild, totally motivated to find pieces that captured her youthful and fun personality and perfectly highlighted every ounce of confidence and beauty Tamara just beams.

I think we accomplished just that.

Boho CollageA casual boho look, perfect for exploring Seattle.
Jeans (Lane Bryant), blouse and cami (Old Navy), Steve Madden flats (DSW).

Romantic CollageVintage floral with a retro flare? She’s basically a walking Nicholas Sparks novel.
Extra thanks to Lands’ End for supplying this gorgeous knit flare dress.

Work CollagePerfect for the office or a night out, we loved the embellishment on this tank top. And cardigans are a Seattle staple.
Jeans (Lane Bryant), tank and cardigan (Old Navy), leather flats (DSW).

Color CollageI don’t like to play favorites, but if Tamara was an outfit, she’d be this. The edgy colors and fun heels perfectly express her style.
This gorgeous modal flare dress courtesy Lands’ End.

Curvy Girl Makeover project could not be possible without amazing sponsors, and it’s especially inspiring when the brands I partner with not only help fund, but also enhance the experience with their own imprint of confidence and creativity. Thank you to Rivet & Sway for helping to make this dream a reality.

An additional thanks to the folks at Go Mighty, whose sole job is connecting people with amazing brands to help achieve their goals, even the crazy ones, like, I want to dress all the women in the world, okay, thanks great!

And there’s more from the folks at Rivet & Sway! If you buy a pair of glasses before October 31 and use the code FINDYOURJOY50 you will get $50 off your glasses and have a chance to win one of two $500 goal grants from Go Mighty!

Those dresses are adorable!! Did you modify them in any way? Or is she wearing them straight off the rack so to speak?

Brittany October 1, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Straight off the rack!

Wow. Tamara you look awesome! Amazing what picking the right shapes and sizes can do. I think people no matter what their size can look beautiful. Great job Britney.
