Curvy Girl Makeover: Sara

by Brittany on June 28, 2013

in Project Curvy, Style & Beauty

So I had this idea.

“I want to travel the country, dressing and styling curvy women.”

It might not be as profound as curing a disease or ending genocide, but to millions of of women left completely disenfranchised by the fashion industry, it’s a big deal.

Learning how to dress your body is a big deal. Especially since for many plus size women, myself included, it’s not really a skill we needed before. Shapes and trends? They weren’t options for us. Our clothing was utilitarian, made for comfort and served to maximize our ability to not be seen.

Ineffectively large floral patterned camo.

But not anymore. I’ve been on a three year crusade, hell bent on helping to reinvent the way society sees beauty, and that meant taking the media and fashion industries head on; showing them that women like me have a voice, and we are worth designing for.

Remember that idea I had up there? Yeah, it was time for that, but I needed help.

So I partnered up with an amazing company, Rivet & Sway, which sells addictively hip women’s eyeglasses (that you can try for free at home, I want them all, click here), and began the epic task of launching the project.

Step 1: Put a call out to see who’s interested.

Step 2: Spend a week crying my face off reading the submissions from hundreds of amazing women.

Step 3: Conquer the impossible task of choosing the first two women.

Step 4: Do it.

First up is Sara. Sara is 33, manages a garden center, spends most of her time outdoors, claims to be a size 18, and wanted, in her words, “girl clothes.”

So, I had Sara meet me at Old Navy, where I had a dressing room full of outfits waiting. Nobody is hanger shaped, so giving her a visual on how to put outfits together is important. Plus, I wanted to get her out of her comfort zone a bit. Skinny jeans, dresses and short shorts. I was giving her options she didn’t realize she had. Once you learn your shape and proportions, shopping and experimenting becomes way easier.

Sara Before

Sara is an apple shape, which means she is thicker in the middle, but has thinner arms and legs, so I gravitated toward looser tops, but bottoms that really emphasized her gorgeous legs. She is also not an 18, she’s a 16, so girlfriend needed to size down, not only in clothes, but in bras. It’s amazing what lifting “the ladies” can do.

Sara Shopping

Finally, we stopped by Attitudes Salon and saw hair guru, Autum, for some added oomph. Sara wears her hair back a lot for work, so I wanted to give her a cute cut that would sill give her that option, and also even out some of the blonde from the sun. Highlights, lowlights and layers, post haste.

Sara Salon

The result? Gorgeous outfits, great shoes, fabulous hair, and the makings of a lifetime accessories addiction. Oh, and smiles. Lots and lots of smiles.

Playing with glasses was really fun. Just like necklaces or shoes, Rivet & Sway has made glasses not just a necessity, but a unique fashion statement. I mean, I could build an entire outfit around these things. Fun colors, edgy styles, I fall in love each time I go to their site. I wanted to make sure Sara stepped outside her box of comfort, and tried shapes and styles she wouldn’t normally choose, so I ordered the free home trial kit with a fun mix of squares, circles and cateyes. Her top picks were the Spitfire, Umami and Hungry Heart.

A huge thanks to the epically wonderful Rivet & Sway for making this project a reality, and for all the crazy gorgeous glasses pictured above.

And an additional thanks to the folks at Go Mighty, whose sole job is connecting people with amazing brands to help achieve their goals, even the crazy ones, like, I want to dress all the women in the world, okay, thanks great!

All the clothes and jewelry can be found at Old Navy, the shoes are from Target, the bras are from Lane Bryant and the fabulous hair was done by Autum Meglitsch at Attitudes Salon.

She was already beautiful but what a fab make over! I’m so jealous of her gorgeous wavy hair!

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 1:51 pm

The hair wand. I swear by them!

dufmanno June 28, 2013 at 6:28 pm

It’s the Robert Plant on tropical holiday hair that I cannot get, no matter how many white hot styling wands I use.
You, my dear, are a magician.

She looks beautiful and you look beautiful and the whole thing is beautiful..
Not the most expressive or articulate comment but heartfelt nonetheless.

Krystal June 28, 2013 at 11:08 am

The skinny jeans look great on her! And the accessories are what totally makes the outfits.

Anne June 28, 2013 at 11:14 am

Sara, you are always beautiful my friend but you are shining in these pictures! Radiating! Showing everyone in the world what your family and friends see when they look at you. You look so comfortable, peaceful, happy, confident :) Love the hair style too! We must go out to celebrate!
Love you!

P.S. Way to go Brittany! Success!

Carrie Sautter June 28, 2013 at 11:14 am

WOWIE~WOW~WOW!!! (to quote Junie B. Jones) I don’t know where to begin…
First off: Sara you look amazing!!
Secondly: AWESOME JOB BRITTANY!! You certainly have a knack for styling ;)
Thirdly: I’m still trying to get over the shock of all that INK on Autum’s arm! lol (♥ yah girly!)
Fourthly: I’m in love with the BOX those glasses come in! The saying on the lid makes it a keeper. (Perhaps they should offer a give-away?! lol)

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Ok I am such a font nerd, so I am equally in LOVE with the box.

Jess G. June 28, 2013 at 11:16 am

You look Fabulous Sara!!!

Kelly June 28, 2013 at 11:19 am

This is so awesome! Great job, Brittany and Sara looks GORG!

Jennifer June 28, 2013 at 11:19 am

Sara you are adorable! I love all of these outfits Brittany helped you pick out. You look fantastic.

Brittany, love the dress with the belt. I’ve been contemplating that look and this was the push I needed to give it a try.

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 1:53 pm

It’s all about finding the right belt proportion. Sara and I were two very different shapes, but by adjusting the belt thickness, pulling the look off was easy!

I can’t wait to see your results!

Liz June 28, 2013 at 11:37 am

She looks great, and I know you had fun. Thanks for doing a make-over that doesn’t involve abject humiliation or total disregard of the preferences of the person getting the makeover. Who knew that was even possible?

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Right? Those shows make me CRINGE. No need to tear down to build back up.

Desera June 28, 2013 at 11:48 am

Love this! Absolutely love the white top with the skinny jeans! Sara looks amazing and she can rock whatever shape glasses she puts on! Gorgeous!

Crista June 29, 2013 at 12:19 pm

That is my favorite outfit, too!
This is so awesome, Brittany! You weren’t satisfied with making yourself over; you wanted to share it with the world. Go you!!

jenna June 28, 2013 at 12:06 pm

Colleen June 28, 2013 at 12:08 pm

WOW, WOW, WOW! Great job! She looks wonderful! Where did you get the shoes?

Colleen June 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Was the dress from Old Navy too?

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 1:58 pm
Brittany June 28, 2013 at 2:04 pm

Oh, and all the shoes are from Target!

davina June 28, 2013 at 12:19 pm

I love all of these looks on Sara. She’s got a natural glow about her. Great job highlighting her best features, Britt. Can’t wait for the next one.

Dana June 28, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Brit can you please list once again what your favorite skinny strap bra is at Layne Bryant to wear under sun dresses? I cannot find the old post. Thanks!

Brittany June 28, 2013 at 2:10 pm
Joy June 28, 2013 at 1:50 pm

Becky June 28, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Damn girl! You totally found your calling in life. She looks fab!!!

Jenna June 28, 2013 at 3:42 pm

I have no other words than to say that people like you make me happy to be a part of this world. Sara is beautiful and I am sure you helped her to see her true inner and outer beauty as a woman. Congrats girl, you never cease to amaze me.

NTE June 28, 2013 at 3:56 pm

She looks amazing – Beautiful, Sara! And I can tell you had a fabulous time doing this, Brittany – I love that your goals are both all you and super wonderful for the rest of us at the same time.
I hope it’s already to ask a couple of questions? It’s ok if you don’t answer, but I’ll check back, just in case… A) Does your local Old Navy store carry plus size (over size 12/14) in the store? Mine does not, & I just assumed it was their policy, but maybe I should try a different store?
b) In the course of your adventures, since I know you will not get to make over everysinglewoman who wants it, is it possible that you could take into account sitting? Like, have some after looks that show well in chairs, for example? Because some of us kind of use them all the time, and they make things that look fabulous standing up (I’m thinking of that blue dress up there in particular) look not so fabulous when you can’t stand up to show it off. Just throwing that out there, for all of us ladies in wheels, who still want to look great too. (But have no clue and are following along quite avidly.) :)

heather June 28, 2013 at 4:48 pm

First off, Sara looks amazing! Good job with the makeover Brittany!

This will help me so much. I am the exact same body shape as Sara! I am serious, we are twins! If she had dark hair and was 5’3, i would go ask my mom why didn’t she tell me I had a sister!
People always tell me i have fabulous arms and legs, but I seem to have trouble with my middle (boobs and tummy look as one. I say i am shaped like a barrel lol)
I am using this post as a template on what to look for next time I had to old Navy!

Dena June 28, 2013 at 5:16 pm

I love Old Navy’s styles, but my local store doesn’t carry bottoms above a size 16. :(

Heather June 28, 2013 at 6:08 pm

Love it! She looks great!

alicia June 28, 2013 at 7:51 pm

love this, and love Sara — amazing transformation, but a natural beauty that shines from within is what really makes these looks come alive…you can feel her happiness in that smile :)

AngelLeigh June 28, 2013 at 8:30 pm

All of the outfits are gorge BUT–the skinny jean/black wedge looks so sexy & yet very casual. You did great &&Sara looks phenomenal!

Morgan June 28, 2013 at 9:08 pm

You need a TV show!

mlyn June 28, 2013 at 10:53 pm

DAMN, Brittany,You are good!!! A beautiful woman becomes even more stunning !! Lucky You Sara !

kailee June 28, 2013 at 11:23 pm

GAH! I love this feature! More, please!

And, Sara, you look gorgeous! You are ROCKING that blue dress. SO CUTE.

Caryl June 28, 2013 at 11:38 pm

Gorgeous. Old Navy is my new crack, and you’re my dealer. Just sayin’….

Ry June 29, 2013 at 5:18 am

Tara June 29, 2013 at 8:17 am

Yeah, that blue dress is BEAUTIFUL on you, Sara. This post is really inspiring for all women who need to find their style, not just plus sized women. Well done, ladies. You rocked it.

Nicole June 29, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Amazing!!! I love her in the shorts and skinny jeans!! Also- I am an apple shape (but not with skinny arms) and am always scared to put a belt with my dresses- but Sara totally has convinced me to at least try it!! Wowza!!

Dorothy June 30, 2013 at 6:25 am

Damn girl!!!! Brittany you are BRILLIANT and Sara you look GORGEOUS! Girl got some NICE LEGS!!! :-)

Alex June 30, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Wow! So awesome!! Brittany, like Dorothy said you are brilliant and Sara, you look amazing and you look so confident! So happy that you have the ability to do these things!

Erin July 1, 2013 at 2:36 am

Just wanted to add to the chorus and tell you how much I love this post! I wish all women could have a friend or stylist like you to show them how to accentuate their natural beauty!

Deb July 1, 2013 at 6:57 am

When will you be in Philadelphia or nearby?

Chandra July 1, 2013 at 10:49 am

Love the outfits!!! Wish you were outfitting Houston! ;)

Jessi July 1, 2013 at 11:08 am

Bravo to Sara for having the courage to do this. And Bravo to you, Brittany for doing it. I love the first blue dress. And having one’s hair down really pulls together an outfit!!

meleah rebeccah July 1, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Absolutely fabulous!! Wow. Wow. Wow.

becca July 2, 2013 at 12:47 pm

So fab! I love it :) Great job lady.

Paige July 2, 2013 at 4:33 pm

She is absolutely gorgeous! She is totally owning and working each and every one of those outfits. Love love LOVE it.

Andrea July 5, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Ok, maybe it’s just me, but I still say skinny jeans are a no-go. They just don’t look right (on me or pretty much anyone i’ve seen over a size 6). I CANNOT WAIT for that trend to be O.V.E.R.

The belted dress look was really cute, and Sara you positively glow in these pics.

Billie July 10, 2013 at 9:17 pm

Wow. Amazing. Beautiful before, stunning after. Great job.

Lissa July 11, 2013 at 10:35 pm

You should totally come to Pennsylvania. We’d have an awesome time. I just finished up my yoga teacher certification and am starting a project you would LOVE.
