To say I’m an emotional person, would be an understatement. Melodramatic, sentimental, bleeding heart might be a better description. I’ve been known to “get something in my eye” when Sarah McLaughlin’s, “Angel” haunts over shots of wounded and mistreated cats and dogs and still get misty-eyed and chills just thinking about Peter coming home for Christmas and surprising the family by making a pot of Folger’s coffee.
But if I’m being honest, I enjoy crying. It’s a release that sometimes can ease the stress of a heartbreak, a long day, or simply having no chocolate in the house. A good ugly cry is like a cleanse and there’s not much better way to achieve that than watching a great tear-jerker movie. The uglier and snottier the cry, the better the movie. Here are some of our picks, without giving away any spoilers, trust me, just grab a box of tissues.
Death
People die in movies…a lot. This category isn’t giving away the plot, necessarily, it’s the personal struggle or how the survivors that are left to pick up the pieces and thrive that make these films so moving.
Love Stories
Love stories tend to be heavy-handed on the corny quotient and end up with me rolling my eyes, instead of needing to wipe the tears away. They have to be super well done for me to cry. These did it for me.

Chick Flicks
Girl power.

Life Affirming
These are my favorite kind of tear-jerker. They’re feel good movies, have great messages, tears come from happiness and sadness and they keep you talking long after.

What tear-jerker movies give you the ugly cry?
Oh my god, Stepmom. I have seen that movie 5,000 times and I still ball my eyes out every. single. time. Also that scene in A League of Their Own when Betty Spaghetti finds out about her husband. Every time!
Oh yeah! Betty breaks my heart.
“George!!”
Aw. I really like that movie. Makes me cry too.
The last time I watched that movie, my husband and I were in the middle of a 2 day fight and he was at work. And all I could think about in that scene was how horrible I would feel if I were in her shoes and I just bawled. We made up as soon as he got home that night.
All fabulous picks. But where is Life as a House? I BAWLED at that movie. Otherwise I love your choices. I’m a crier too and sometimes I will watch one of my favourites just because I know it will make me cry and crying can be a really good release.
I’ve never seen Life as a House. It’s now on my must see list.
For sure. Kevin Klein. You will love it and cry. So good.
I jumped onto Pinterest and saw pics of all these movies and thought “must be tearjerker day…”
Terms of Endearment
Hardball
The Notebook
HARDBALL!!!!! Oh my holy goodness, I was wholly unprepared for that. I thought I was the only person who remembered that movie. That was UGLY…on a date.
Men Don’t Leave. It’s old, but it’s a terrific movie and it makes me bawl every time.
P.S. I Love you. That one gets me going about 5 minutes in, and I cry continuously throughout the ENTIRE MOVIE.
This was me and my friend. She had rented it and was already watching when I got there. As soon as I walked in she simply handed me the tissues, and we both cried the whole way through.
I have seen almost every one of these movies and now apparently have to see the other two. And I have Steel Magnolias and Beaches but definitely need to pick up Sex and the City. It doesn’t make me cry but it makes me laugh and feel good and I love it. If I want to cry I absolutely put in Steel Magnolias or Beaches though. They work every time.
Oh and I really agree with Jill on P.S. I Love You and with Jen D. for A League of Their Own. So good!!
Schindler’s List, The Color Purple, Bridges of Madison County.
So much ugly crying.
I was reminded (after I wrote this) of The Color Purple and E.T.- definite oversights, on my part.
OMG! Steel Magnolias, Beaches, and The Notebook… yes!
I realize this won’t apply to everyone, but I have to add Marley and Me to this list. No movie has ever evoked such strong emotion in me, both laughter and tears. Having grown up with labs, I can totally relate to the whole movie and how much a pet becomes part of the family.
Oh… and I haven’t seen either in years, but Titanic and Pearl Harbor also made me cry pretty hard.
I cry my eyes out to “Love, Actually”. From the very start, right thru to the end. Thank goodness for some silly laughter scenes, that’s when I cry hiccup, and catch my breath for more crying. I love every minute of that movie.
What about Bridges of Madison County?
I always cry at the beginning, at Liam Neeson’s wife’s funeral, when they play that “Bye bye baby” song. So sad! And such a great movie!!!
I am Sam. I am crying from minute one and Sean Penn is amazing
I almost never cry during movies, but I ALWAYS cry in the final scene of Uncle Buck where the teenage girl reconciles with her mom. Seriously.
Warrior. For real. If you haven’t seen it you must check it out.
The Pursuit of Happiness made me sob uncontrollably. And I cried ALL THE WAY THROUGH My Sister’s Keeper.
Slow clap for listing One True Thing! No one I mention that movie to has ever seen it and it kills me. I’m adding to the list It’s M
*Hit enter on accident* Back to my list additions…
It’s My Party (based on a true story)
And a big huge “DITTO” to Holly’s addition of I Am Sam. That movie is brilliant.
This is the second time today I heard It’s My Party! I’ve never even heard of it. It’s now a must.
Embarrassing, but seriously, the end of Armageddon gets me EVERY time.
Also, serious ugly cry with Time Traveler’s Wife and Ladder 49
LADDER 49! Oh my…YES. But seriously just thinking about that movie depresses the hell out of me.
The end of Armageddon! Ah! So many tears.
I too love a good cry! You hit most of my favorites
Beaches
Steel Magnolias
The Notebook
The only one I would need to add is
My Life with Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman. Big old ugly cry!
Oh yeah! I forgot Hope Floats!
The scene where the daughter cries while her dad drives away, kills me everytime!
I bugged and bugged my husband (back when we were dating) to watch Steel Magnolias. I went on and on about how great it is. And one night, we watched it together. And I fell asleep. But I woke up in time to see the end, and to see my husband bawling his eyes out. Such a good movie.
Also American Beauty. The reminiscing at the end just hits me right in the heart.
Armageddon. Talk about ugly crying.
Steel Magnolias, The Patriot, A League of Their Own, The Notebook, Pearl Harbor, The Lion King, and Terms of Endearment.
As much as I dislike movies based on Nicholas Sparks’s books, I sob every time A Walk to Remember is on tv. It might not even be a sad part but I’m already crying because I know what’s coming. The book as even worse; the only other book I’ve ever cried that hard during was Where the Red Fern Grows. I get choked up just talking about it.
I am adding a few movies to my need to see list. I love it when you all do lists like this. I always find new things to watch/read/ taste.
Also Dead Poets Society gets me every time.
I am a complete and utter sap so it doesn’t take a lot to get me to cry. I sobbed at the end of Hocus Pocus for crying out loud.
I have owned Life as a House forever and still haven’t watched it. I think I’ll rectify that this weekend, I’m in need of a good cry.
Je ne connaissais pas du tout ce projet. Merci 1000 fois ! Bonne journée
