Do I read about sex a lot? Yes. It’s why I have an e-reader. But, the truth is the majority of what I read is 1. the dictionary, obvs, and 2. humor.
I read and watch lots and lots of humor, and I wanted to share with you some favorites that are currently taking up residence on my Kindle right now, you know, in case you needed a break from having your sex stimulated and your inner goddess toyed with.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, Mindy Kaling
After reading this book, I realized something; Mindy and I are best friends. In fact, if my skin was capable of any sort of tan, I would assume we were related. Not everyone knows that Mindy (and Toby!) is a writer and producer of the office. This book shows why. It’s hilarious, from her awkward childhood to dating adventures to making her way in the entertainment industry. I am so excited this Indian girl next door is finally getting her writing dues.
White Girl Problems, Babe Walker
Listen you guys…this book is hysterical. Like, from the very first page, I was laughing, and I laughed and giggled through the whole fucking book. In fact, I read it twice, and it was just as funny the second time. It’s essentially a faux-memoir of a spoiled heiress who recounts how she ended up in rehab. I’m particularly fond of the phonetic interactions with her Nanny/BFF Mabinty and how she has Grease-themed sex with her gay friend Roman. This book is either going to offend you or make you pee yourself.
You’re Not Doing It Right, Michael Ian Black
So you probably know Michael Ian Black from every I Love the 70’s/80’s/90’s/Random Inanimate Objects show on VH1. I actually became a huge MIB fan after watching the movie Wet Hot American Summer (Spoiler Alert: he marries Bradley Cooper. Best movie ever.) I read his previous book, My Custom Van, and to be honest it was funny, but in a I’m totally high right now sort of way. This book, however, was fantastic. I laughed and I cried. It was honest and hilarious and sad, the perfect reflection of what it’s like being a guy, a husband and a dad.
Relative Insanity, Shauna Glenn
I am so lucky that one of my best friends in the world is such an amazing and hilarious writer, because then when I need my fix, I just have to call her and make her say funny things to me. And she does, every fucking time. This is Shauna’s second book, and the whole time I read it, I kept texting her saying STOP WRITING ABOUT ME IN YOUR BOOK. She just gets women. Sometimes we love our families. And other times, we want to punch them in the face.
Girl Walks Into a Bar, Rachel Dratch
Yes, Tena Fey wrote Bossypants and it was wonderful. But, Dratch also tackled the memoir scene, and I gotta say, I really loved this book. It was such a cool look at the politics behind SNL, 30 Rock and the entertainment industry in general. How her looks determined the often ridiculous roles she was offered. Chubby one-armed lesbian best friend with a lisp? Check. And it’s hilarious.
Agorafabulous!, Sara Benincasa
I had the pleasure of meeting Sara in NYC and hearing her speak and she’s absolutely hysterical. She does amazing political satire, and a wonderful series, Gettin’ Wet with Sara Benincasa, where she interviews people (DONALD GLOVER OMG!) in the bathtub. I know, I’m jealous, also. Her book was a weird one for me to read, perhaps because I have a personal family connection to agoraphobia. She really put you right there with her, through the funny parts and the gross parts. Nobody does mental illness like Sara, and that’s a compliment.
Catch up on our Dirty Little Book Club!
I have the first book sitting on my kitchen island… it is next in line to read. someone mailed it to me and said it was good… i dont watch the office or really know of anything i have seen with her in it and so was not thrilled to read it. but i cant turn down a free book to read.
“White Girl Problems” is perfection!
I’m quasi-reading “Life As I Blow It” by Sarah Cologna right now….amusing and snarky.
Have Mindy’s book but haven’t had a chance to read it as I’m too deep into the Dirty Book Club list but may have to come up for air and visit with Mindy.
Just added a few others from this list to my “to read list.” You have never failed me with a book recommendation…or any recommendation, for that matter. ;)
Great recommendations. I love funny, so I’ll check them out.
LOVE Mindy Kaling’s book!
Great recommendations! You would SO enjoy Jen Lancaster’s books; the snark and fun are unmatched in my opinion!
Love these recs! I was a little disappointed with Mindy Kaling’s book, but I think it’s ‘cuz I was comparing it to Bossypants. Definitely going to check out your recs, ESPECIALLY Shauna’s!

I love me some good book recommendations that aren’t 50 Shades… Thanks!
I have had such a crush on Michael Ian Black, ever since watching The State in high school. Funny will get me every time. I didn’t know he had written a book, so that’s one I have to add to my list. Thanks for the suggestions!
If you haven’t read “Shit My Dad Says” by Justin Halpern – OMG. I haven’t laughed that hard since I read David Sedaris’s essay “You Can’t Kill the Rooster.” Which was like, eight years ago.
Love Mindy’s book!!
