Ash Beckham, My New Future Best Friend

Here’s a clip of Ash Beckham at Boulder Ignite talking about the word “gay.” Confused about it? No worries, she made hilarious flow charts.

“You can legislate tolerance, you can’t legislate acceptance, that takes a societal shift.”

*Mentally adds Ash to the list of people I want to give half a BFF necklace to.*

That’s wonderful…I felt the same thing when I moved to New England and many people use the word retarded in the same manner. One person at a time, just change one person at a time.

If she does not tour and give that speech to high schools, I will be sad. What a cool, hip, self-assured speaker and speech. It’s perfectly stated, perfectly illustrated, and well, just perfect. Way to go Ash!

Love this! This is a conversation I have with my students often. I don’t allow “that’s gay” comments to be used in my classroom (or life… ask my friends and family) for this very reason. It breaks my heart to think about the students in my school who have to hear such language. When I teach persuasion, we talk about Public Service Announcements, and there was a series a few years back where a bunch of celebrities did an anti-that’s-so-gay campaign. I may need oto share this with them too!
